Cornice Boards

I had the chance to use my glue gun again today, always a good thing!
I have cornice boards above 2 of my windows that I had someone make about 12 years ago. I have made cornice boards before, they are fairly easy, but these were more decorative at one time. About 4 years ago I took the front off, they were curved, and put a straight board on them and recovered them. When I covered them I left some fabric on the back thinking it wouldn't make any difference but I was never happy with how it looked from the outside when the drapes were open.

I just repainted the rooms and took the drapes down to be cleaned so I thought it was a perfect time to fix the cornice boards.

I started by trimming back the fabric that I had left on the cornice board.

Then the glue gun came out. I started by gluing down the cornice fabric so it was a little tighter in a few places.

I folded over one edge of the fabric and glued it about 1/2 inch from the bottom edge. I glued a section along the bottom (about 6 inches at a time), smoothed it out and then glued a couple spots on the top edge. Do this working all the way down. That is it;  a few yards of fabric, a hot glue gun and an hour+ and now valances I am happy with.

My window looks like a mirror, good thing you can't see how dirty they really are!
Sorry this is so dark. Trust me, it looks nice!

Baby Shower Diaper Cake

A co-worker of mine is going to be a Grandma!
I am very excited for her. I have been invited to her daughter's baby shower and as a gift I am taking a Baby Shower Diaper Cake. It will also be used as a center piece.

The finished cake
These are so easy to make and are a fun way to give a gift without the wrapping paper.

Supplies you will need:
  • Base - whatever size you want, I used 16 in circle
  • Paper towel tube
  • Tissue paper
  • Diapers - I used 7doz newborn
  • Tape
  • 4 receiving blankets
  • 12 pair newborn socks
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • 3 bibs
  • 3 caps

Start out with a base. I used a piece of foam board that I cut into a 16-inch circle. You can buy cake circles already cut out at any bakery supply store or craft store. This was cheaper.

Just be careful when you are cutting out the circle. Be sure to put a cutting mat underneath it. I'm not admitting to anything!! Just saying.......

I didn't like the rough edges so I covered it with some white tissue paper.
Mark the center

With my trusty glue gun I put a bead of hot glue on the center circle and sat the tube on top of it.
Then I put an extra bead of glue around the tube for extra strength.

Now start attaching the diapers. Wrap the first one around the tube and start adding them by taping them together. I used a clear tape that I tested on the diapers first to make sure it could come off without ruining the diapers. They are part of the gift, too.

I used 4 doz diapers on the bottom, I think. I lost count but that is close.
Take your receiving blankets and fold them to the height of the cake layer. It took 2 blankets to wrap around the 1st layer. I secured them with some soft fuzzy baby yarn I had.
Then start on then next layers. Once you have all the layers you want put together and wrapped you can start to decorate.

First layer - I used some bibs and baby caps rolled up to cover up the diapers. I also tucked some head bows around and some socks under the yarn.
Second layer - I rolled up baby socks and tucked in
Third layer - I used a cuddly teddy blankey as a topper.

Day 23 - 30 Days of Photo Fun, My Girls

My Girls
What a great Easter Surprise!

We knew our youngest daughter was coming home from college for the weekend and were excited to see her. She called to say that her roommate would be bringing her home so we didn't have to go pick her up. (Her school is only 30 minutes away! I love that, even though she attends a rival Big 10 school, but.....).

Our oldest daughter had told us she wouldn't be able to come home. She lives in Chicago and her boyfriend is busy with school and they just didn't have the time to make the long drive. We understood, but were sad, it is a long way to drive for a short weekend.

Well, Saturday afternoon I was in the laundry room and the backdoor opened. I turned to say hi to Jenn and in walked Aubrey, followed by Jenn. Aubrey had driven from Chicago the day before and spent the night at Jenn's.

I love my girls and having them at home. We haven't done anything exciting or out of the ordinary, it is just great having them here with us.

For all of you who have kids still at home, enjoy every second. Even those moments you think you can hardly wait for them to go so you can have a moment of peace and quiet or don't have to drive them somewhere. You will miss those days! Give them a hug & let them know you love them now!

I love you girls!!
